It is known nationally and internationally for its close ties to the Royal Navy. But due to money problems, the family that has run it for generations has had to make the tough choice to close it down, although owner Punch Taverns says it wants to find a new licensee."

A traditional sailors' pub consisting of two or three tiny rooms all knocked together to form a single small bar. This year it celebrated 50 years of being owned by the same family. There are two small tv screens, both unobtrusive. A dartboard and gaming machine provide the main entertainment. The bar staff were very welcoming, the clientele were raucous but friendly. The bar is decorated with nautical memorabilia including an impressive collection of ships' plaques, many historical, which provides a real link to the Navy. Original floorboards and fireplace, and the atmosphere was calm until the jukebox ruined it. No real ale, so good though it is I shan't be making it a regular venue although Jack should include it in a run ashore.

The Royal Standard is a smallish pub that is on the opposite corner to the Park Tavern,i think this pub was the better of the two. Once inside we went in a smallish bar that had lots of naval caps, badges and the like on the walls,this room was fairly basic but we found it to be a nice pub to have a drink in. This pub was a Whitbread tied house when went in it and there was one real ale on here this was Whitbread Flowers bitter and this was a nice well kept pint. we quite liked this pub.
