A large roadside inn on the way into Lyme, the building has a commanding position over the valley next to it. There is a car park just before you get to the main building, from which there is a short walk either past or through the neighbouring park-like garden. Inside, the main bar is formed from conjoined earlier rooms, and is informally divided into a dining area with a chimney breast containing an open fire, a collection of miniature bottles around the walls and a small buffet table. The drinking area was largely occupied by locals and has a piano. There is a basement bar reached down a steep set of stairs to the side; this has a pool table, large TV and some comfy chairs. The pub has a strong regular cadre, the staff and clientele are friendly, and it would make an excellent local apart from not allowing dogs in. Ales were Otter Amber, Ale and Claus, while the keg choices were Otter Tarka Four, Mahou and Guinness. Worth dropping in next time I’m passing without the dogs.
