One of 2 or 3 pubs near the harbour, these have a different feel to those in the town itself. The Royal Standard has entrances from both the coastal pathway and a street behind. The bar is split into two parts. One part has a pool table, which was soon in use shortly after I arrived. There appeared to be a dartboard in the other section. The pub has bare boards. Framed postcards of the beach and the coastline can be found on the walls. Music was playing. Dogs are allowed in.

Most people were taking advantage of an outdoor patio on the beach side of the property. It is mainly covered for when the rain blows in.

This is a Palmer's pub. So, you know what to expect. IPA, 200 & Dorset Gold are all stocked on cask, with Dorset Orchards First Press also available. There was also a spare handpull. Palmer's Dorset Pale was on keg, along with a couple more ciders - Gold & Orchard Haze. Food is served lunchtimes and evenings and there is a specials board.

This pub was closed for a while but has now reopened under Palmer’s Brewery. As Palmer’s pubs go it wasn’t that expensive. Three Palmer’s ales on draft, I had the Copper which was in very good condition. Its position near the sea front means that it was overcrowded with grockles when we visited which did detract from the enjoyment, but I’d be keen to come back out of season and enjoy what it has to offer, which includes a pool table and a beach bar.
