Palmer's pub on the main street through the village that felt a little upmarket. It is the sort of place that attracts ladies that lunch. In fact, when I arrived on a Tuesday afternoon, there was a couple of ladies having what looked like post-lunch drinks and another couple with a dog. A few other women also walked in to retrieve the keys to their accommodation at the pub. They were in the area for walking. Accommodation is in a separate outbuilding.

A surf and turf night was being advertised and I availed myself of a sausage roll which were sat in a tub on the bar, as I was on the look out for some kind of snack. There are 4 handpulls on the bar. 3 were dispensing Copper, Dorset Gold & IPA. The fourth may be used for a cider during the summer months, which probably indicates the clientele attracted here. Whilst I noticed that most Dorset pubs stock a cider year-round to accommodate local tastes, this one is aimed more at tourists who only seem to enjoy cider in the warmer months. However, the Dorset Orchards Gold & Orchard Haze ciders were stocked on keg, along with Palmer's Dorset Pale.

I'm not sure what the Giant Inn and the Royal Oak Inn are like these days, as it's been 14 years since I was last in the village. But I suspect that there are better pubs in the village. The Cerne Abbas Brewery Tap is definitely a better option.

A coaching inn dating from the 15th Century, the pub has been extensively renovated in recent years and is well described below. Accommodation is of a very high standard, and the food is remarkable. Despite the renovations, the pub has retained a lot of character and is a comfortable, convivial place to be. There are various architectural features including an unusual bow window, a large chandelier made from sika antlers, exposed timbers and rather more modern cast iron radiators. The formal small dining room was laid out for a group meal, the main dining area was busy with quiet couples and the lounge area was plain pleasant. The landlord and landlady were very welcoming indeed. Four ales on draft, all from Palmers: Copper, Dorset Gold, IPA and 200, all in perfect condition. I shall definitely be back and would love to use the B&B facilities some time.

A deightful undressed brick and stone pub and restaurant, with Tudor styled windows and which also does accommodation. Entry is through the coach archway and there is a patio and beer garden at the back.

The interior is an L-shaped room around the small bar (in a strange bluey colour, so my notes say) and is modern and minimalist in its decor. The room is mainly given over to dining, or so it feels and is in red and white, with white ceiling, with a few exposed beams. A few prints and mirrors offer some interest as well as the fireplace at the far end of the room, surrounded by chopped wood. I didn't try the food, but wish i had, after BF's review below. There was no TV that i saw and no music. The service was fine and the clientele consisted of a few locals and i had a good chat to a friendly chap.

Beer; tap stuff, with Palmer Dorset Gold, Copper Ale and Best Bitter - a swift half of all three ensued and all were fine.

I liked this place, but i think i visited at the right time for me (interested in the beer, rather than food) - but i tell you what, i would love to go back. Cerne Abbas is indeed blessed!
