As described below this Palmer’s pub is welcoming, quirky and comfortable. Parking was a bit problematic due to holiday traffic but we managed. The barman was friendly and helpful, the other customers relatively civilised. The traditional décor had been modernised (cheapened?) by the addition of fairy lights to the ceiling beams, there was a bookshelf under the bar, they made a big thing about their 300 year old plumbing, and the woodburner in the stone fireplace was lit, providing a degree of warmth. The food looked pleasant but was quite expensive, obviously cashing in on the tourist custom. Ales on were Copper – this was insipid as the pipes hadn’t been correctly pulled through, but was changed when we mentioned it – Gold, IPA, 200 and Tally Ho, plus First Press cider was on draft. Overall an enjoyable experience and worth a visit for a few beers.

Another quality Palmers House. Quiet on a Sunday Afternoon. In a change from the 200, I went for the Best Bitter. It was also excellent, although I would stick to the 200. A perfect village pub.

This largeish old pub offers the full Palmers range – Copper Ale, Best, Dorset Gold, 200 (at £3.60), and Tally Ho (£3.70). There are a fish menu and a daily specials board, with mains starting at around £8.95.
You enter via the main bar area, and can walk round to the restaurant room on the right if you are eating. In doing so you pass a curious table whose supports are the two ends of a bed. The walls are adorned with a combination of framed old photos of the local area, and modern wildlife prints which available to buy. The ‘goshawk in snow’ disappeared during the week, but my enquiry confirmed it had fallen off the wall rather than being sold. To the rear are a heated patio area and a grassed garden.
This is a local ‘all rounder’ village pub, in that it provides well for drinkers and diners, locals and visitors, and I liked it as such.
