Originally a coaching inn called The King’s Arms, then a pub called The Thief as described by Blackthorn below, it’s now a boutique hotel and cafe. There is seating in the former courtyard, and there is a small bar in the room on the left as you enter, though there is no bar counter. No draft beers available, just bottled lagers, over priced wines and cocktails brought over by pleasant young staff. The remainder of the ground floor is given over to dining tables, while we didn’t look at the accommodation. The clientele seemed very happy with the facilities, so it’s probably a good place to stay, though it doesn’t have its own parking. As a pub, though, it’s no longer a starter.

Since my previous review, this has been shut for a period of time and then extensively refurbished before re-opening with a (rather odd) new name, and is now quite unrecognisable from it’s earlier incarnation.
It has now has a much cleaner, stripped back look with something of a monotone colour scheme. The floors are all sanded wood whilst there is white plasterwork on the upper part of the walls and black wood panelling down below. White butcher’s tiling was behind the bar, and there was a vary tatty old leather sofa in the window with foam sticking through in places and mismatched cushions. There was some black and white artwork on the walls and the lighting was unusual in that they appeared to be workman’s inspection lamps that had been fixed to the wall complete with a sort length of cable.
The courtyard outside is pleasant enough with some fairy lights at the back and a number of wooden benches with rather flimsy folding metal legs. There was also an old workbench with the vice still attached. We didn’t eat on this occasion, and there was no obvious sign of food being offered other than a few jars of nuts on the bar and some breakfast cereals on a shelf, presumably for any residents.
Beers on tap were Plain Ales Sheep Dip and Bath’s Gem, whilst a third pump appeared unused. The solitary cider was Orchard Pig Reveller.

A slightly alternative pub just a couple of minutes stroll away from the centre, but nonetheless a decent enough place. At the front is a small courtyard which you have to walk through to get to the bar, and behind this a pool room. The bar itself looks to be stuck in a bit of a time warp, and probably hasn’t changed much since the 70’s. Certainly the curtains look to be at least 30 years old! It’s clearly a bit of a music venue with various posters on the window advertising up and coming bands as well as numerous instruments adorning the interior – several violins and a large bass drum hanging from the ceiling, trumpets and an accordion above the bar, etc.
The band/stage area is at the rear of the pub, along with a dart board. At the front is an old TV in one corner, a disused fireplace and a fruit machine adjacent to it. There are numerous photographs, old beer posters, etc. on the walls and interestingly a Jack Daniels pane of glass in the entrance door which I’ve not seen anywhere else. There was also a very retro computer game which must also be from the 70’s, although whether this was still working I’m not sure.
There was a good mixture of age ranges present, and punters and landlady all seemed friendly enough. There was a very basic bar snack menu offered on lunchtimes only – a few omelettes, baguettes, and several variations on chips and beans – Cheesy Chips & Bacon; Double egg, chips & beans; Cheesy Chips, beans & bread etc.
Beers on tap were Courage Best and London Pride. There was also a pump clip for Otter Ale although it appeared that this had run out. Ciders were Blackthorn, Strongbow & Thatcher’s Gold.
