A very modern, in a good way, new country pub in an agricultural building, a successful diversification of a farm business. There is space for a few cars to park on the yard and in the road, but it’s not a huge car park. Not difficult to find, but once there the only real confirmation is a small wooden sign, hand carved. A five bar gate leads to a paved patio with tables, chairs and umbrellas, from which the door into the repurposed shed is entered. Inside is fresh, bright and pleasant. The single room is a rough L-shape, with a small area on a slightly lower level. Front the upper level you look over the working stable yard, while the lower area’s view is across open fields in the adjacent valley. The bar is in one corner, the long side supporting keg pumps dispensing Estrella, Carlsberg, Thatcher’s Gold and Haze, Guinness, Level Head, Henry Weston’s and Asahi. There was a box of Rosie’s Pig cider on the bar, and best of all, Cheddar Gorge Best and Potholer on handpump, both in excellent condition. There was also a coffee machine, and freshly cooked food is on offer at reasonable prices, while free dog treats were available on the bar. The staff were friendly and helpful, while the clientele seemed t be a mix of locals and elderly diners. I wish more new pubs were this good, and I’ll certainly be back.
