Blackthorn _ left this review about Mercy Mercy Mercy

A relatively recent opening on the site of what was for many years a homewares/gift shop and then a fairly short lived upmarket stationers, I have walked past here a few times previously and always thought it was now just a coffee shop. In fact I have even been in for a cake and not noticed any beer, so perhaps it is a recent addition, and the fact that their website lists the closing time on a Saturday as 5pm whereas the barman informed me it is 9pm rather supports this hypothesis. It was only on walking past on a recent Saturday afternoon and seeing people sat outside with pints that we decided it warranted further investigation.

Internally it’s a fairly long and narrow room, with the bar taking up much of the available space in the centre leaving little more than a walkway between the two ends. It has very much of a coffee shop feel to it rather than your traditional pub, with light, sanded wooden boards on the floor, very pale paintwork on the walls and the ceilings, and large, full height windows on two sides letting in plenty of light. A few small areas had been painted in burnt orange to give it a splash of colour, and there were a number of pot plants dotted around.

Predictably enough there were no real ales on tap, with most of the countertop being taken up with coffee cups, a coffee machine, pot plants and cakes. There were though a few keg taps on the back wall, with Wiper & True’s Kaleidoscope being the sole beer offering, whilst the cider was Branch’s Bristol Blend, which went down well. This is a tricky one to mark. As a pub it falls woefully short to the point of barely being a pub, but on the other hand, if you want a beer sat outside, then your options around here are quite limited.
