Previously a butcher’s shop, this is now the brewery tap for the Gyle 59 Brewery which is based further North, near Chard. The ground floor forms a single room bar with the original tiled floor and no counter, just a collection of sofas and low tables. Around the walls are various esoterica such as two original arcade games – Pac-Man and Street Fighter II, an industrial coffee machine, a fridge and shelves with the full range of their beers in cans and bottles. Their beers are all keg and poured from a bank of taps on the end wall. We were invited to grab a clean glass and pour our own. Food is on offer – novelty chicken wings, pizzas, nachos and similar. The cellar is used as a cinema on occasion, and a sign on the front of the pub indicates how this works, asking people to be quiet when the red light is on. The landlord was very entertaining, welcoming, and indeed knowledgeable. It had many of the features of a good micro, apart from not having cask ale or any cider, and it suffers from limited opening hours.
