Very striking micro with lots of attractive eccentricity. The bar counter is comparatively conventional, with three hand pumps centrally placed, a row of keg taps on the unadorned sheet metal bar back, and a black board displaying available drinks and prices. Though the hand pumps are decorated too, with a couple of hand carved llamas on the plinth next to my chosen oatmeal stout. The owner was friendly and engaging, and helped me identify more pubs and clubs to photograph on Heaton Road than I had reckoned for, as well as encouraging me to have a look at the basement. This sort of invitation often ends badly, but in this case it was just a bit more eccentricity. The toilet is not spared, with a map of the shipping forecast areas on the wall above the receptacle, and an embroidered sign pointing to "sea" above and "pee" below. (Anyone who doesn't pee standing up will miss this, unfortunately.) My beer was the oddly named (well, it would be, wouldn't it?) Moria, a 4% stout from Silent Brew Co (NBSS 4, £4.50/pint). Anyone who has not already visited should definitely give this one a go.

Brilliant new bar in the expanding Heaton Road Quarter of Newcastle. 10 craft and other keg lines and three cask handpulls, all with a wide variety of changing beers.

A very friendly welcome is guaranteed and the pub is dog friendly.
