Visited 20/01/26. Visited previously as 1886 Bar & Grill on 03/04/23.
No cask! Keg offering of Stella, Carling, Guinness, Stowford Press, Bud Light, Angelo Poretti, dark fruits SB and Worthington CF.
Could hardly believe my eyes walking into a “JDW” to find there is no cask beer. In fact, the inattentive bar staff did not even understand the request re my alternatives to the keg show on offer and started looking through the fridges behind the counter for a beer of that name when they checked spelling. Ostensibly the venue is the old post office HQ, is bare boarded with a ceramic tile skirt along the bar counter which runs along the rear wall a few paces inside the entrance. There are large screens above the bar counter showing news channels with no sound, indeed the only sound was of the bar staff clanking the glasses behind the bar counter as they were emptying the dish washers. The main seating area is in the long rectangle in front thereof, mixture of regular and tall tables with a blue studded leather banquette along the left-hand wall. There is an area behind the left-hand edge of the bar counter with a few more comfy seating options. There is upstairs seating with its own bar presumably accessed somewhere off the right-hand edge of the bar counter but given the offensive beer offering I could not bring myself to further investigate the layout of the venue. JDW’esque crowd in on my late evening visit after trekking from the other end of the Promenade in driving rain to tick off this quaffing dud. Some sort of JDW franchise, but nothing like a JDW.
