Recently opened as a pub on the site of a former and well-regarded wine merchants, this still has something of a wine bar feel and ethos to it, but does nonetheless offer a small array of keg options.
It’s situated in the cellars of the buildings above and this makes for quite an attractive space with vaulted, brick ceilings and long narrow rooms, with a snug or two off to the side. Flooring is predominantly old flagstones although there was some slightly tacky looking laminate at the rear. Much of the ceiling had been painted black, and most of the walling white which created a rustic, but not gloomy feel with blue lighting on some of the ceiling adding a splash of colour, although the oversized cable trays perhaps jarred somewhat. A smaller room off to the side looked to be very geared up for wine tasting still, with an extensive array of bottles available to purchase. Seating was mostly small square tables and padded leather stools. Unusual features were ice buckets built in to the tables for chilling your wine, and even lockers that would store up to nine bottles. Apparently if you take up some sort of membership deal, you get supplied with one of these to store any bottles you have purchased to then imbibe at your leisure!
Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, just Wiper & True’s Kaleidoscope on keg. The solitary cider meanwhile was Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, despite not being a traditional pub, I actually quite liked it here with it’s chilled out atmosphere, pleasant ambience and friendly barmaid.
