As I approached Alder on Easter Sunday, with Burton Road blocked by three fire engines, and two police cars and some crime scene tape blocking the junction with Percy Street, my chances of getting a drink looked slim. But suddenly the police found better things to do, and the sound of bank holiday weekend drinkers mixed with random music told me the party was still on. Actually I got served quite quickly despite a throng in front of the bar, and the intelligent server added my request for Bass and my decrepit appearance together and calculated that the plastic receptacles for keg beer drinkers would not be the thing. If it had been plastic only I would have stormed out and missed the best pint of Bass-with-a-tight-head-northern-style that I've had in a long time. (No head at all, and decanted from a jug at the Star in Bath remains the pinnacle.) The staff were coping brilliantly with what must have been a difficult afternoon, but I'm still not a fan of the rather rough and thrown-together feel of this small workshop conversion. Can't fault the beer though.

A modern bar with a bit of a warehouse taproomy feel about it, from the five handpumps there were a couple of Ossett cask beers on as well as my choice of Blue Bee Reet Pale available which wasn't completely to my taste but was ok. Certainly a place worth a look but it wouldn't be top of my list in the area.

Formerly the occasional bar of the Sheffield Brewery, which has been mothballed since the Covid pandemic and the premises are now called Alder, with an improvised interior and a sketchy beer garden in what I assume were formerly workshops and such, like most of this area. I did call in once before, but it was a weekend, and too noisy for me so I didn't join the queue. Last week's visit was a Friday, but early enough in the afternoon to be fairly quiet. The presence of a small hen party was a hint of what it might be like later. There were four hand pumps on the bar (see photos): I went for the local Grizzly Grains, but I have yet to be impressed with any of their beers, and this one didn't break their duck, probably not helped by being a little flabby (NBSS 2.5). The Rudgate Battleaxe, one of two from this usually reliable brewery, was a bit better (NBSS 3) but nothing to write home about. To be fair, if the plan had been to stop here for three pints I'd have been happy with just Battleaxe, but being five minutes walk away from the Kelham Island Tavern and the Fat Cat, this bar - although pleasant enough - needs to try harder to get my repeat custom.
