Promoted as Guernseys only Craft Brewery, the Little Big Brewery is tucked away a bit out of the centre of St Peter Port on St George’s Esplanade between the Foresters Arms and the Jamaica Inn ( two locals pubs with no real ale from what we could see) and we searched it out on our first evening in town expecting great things.
Standard one room micro brewery tap room set up with various seating styles along a thin room with a small serving area at the end on the right hand side. This supported three ale hand pumps and at least six keg taps.
The breweries Cecilia, Alan and Betty were available on the real ale pumps and then replicated in keg alongside others on the taps. Between us we tried all three of the ales with indifferent results. For the Cecilia, let’s just say I’ve had better Hazy IPA’s, the Alan was served far too warm and the Betty was the best of an average bunch.
We came across the keg options in several other establishments in St Peter Port where it made a decent alternative to the Beavertown and Camden products that seem to dominate the craft beer scene in Guernsey and the Alan and Betty keg versions were reliably better than our initial cask experience. And as we subsequently didn’t find their cask products in any other outlets on the island you have to wonder if this is a focus for them.
If the tap room had showcased only their keg products I might have scored them higher but to have three ales on and not have them in best condition is not the greatest advert for any brewery, big or small..
