A new venture (opened Sep 22) for the high street, in premises previously used as a night club. The main bar at ground level is L-shaped and runs the complete depth of the building. The bottom end contains a pool table, juke box and TV screen, while the smaller end near the front door has seats and tables. There is a second bar in the cellar, but this wasn’t yet opened when we visited; it’s believed this will be used as a music venue. Given its location and surprisingly low prices it’s no surprise that Taunton’s less affluent retirees choose to spend their ‘giro’ money here rather than on soap, so in the daytime it has the aesthetics of a homeless drop-in centre. One assumes that it becomes rather different as the night draws in. No real ale or cider, just a single craft offering from Midway alongside the standard bank of keg. The staff were welcoming though, and the young landlord has great ambitions for the place, so maybe it will get better. I’ll pass this one ova for now though.
