Steptoes is situated - somewhat unexpectedly - underneath a small parade of shops, the fall of the ground providing a basement that's not actually underground. (Streetview shows that it used to be a hairdresser's salon.) This space, being fairly long, the bar is naturally on the back wall, with toilets at the right hand end and most of the seating to the left, near the large video screen halfway up the wall showing an open fire. No, I'm not joking.
There are four hand pumps on the bar and cake in a display cabinet nearby. I should have gone for the cake. My half of Belhaven 80/- (yes, I know - what was I thinking?) was very cold. This may be authentic if it's in Scotland and it's keg, but this is a cask beer and not meant to be served at 4 degrees celsius; unless you're trying to disguise the fact that it's on the turn, of course. And so it proved. This is a shame, because the place is quite nicely presented, with comfortable seating and a degree of quirkiness in the nicknacks on display. And friendly service too. But the beer's got to be right, and it clearly wasn't. It was quite busy at the time of my late Saturday afternoon visit, but there was a lot more lager and gin being drunk than real ale.
