A rarity - a cafe bar that actually functions as one with a 50/50 split (bar at front, café at rear). Long and narrow inside and it feels a bit like a cross between a seaside café and a cellar bar. Not much to set the pulse racing, décor-wise, but nice enough. Run by the same people as the Blue Boar in LE1 and Ale Stone in Aylestone and it shares similar beers. Inevitably GBG listed with an eclectic line-up of beers and ciders, Untappd tells me that I had (or shared with the missus) casks of Then Maybe You Shouldn’t Be Living Here by Lenton Lane Brewery (NBSS 3) and Victorian Ruby Mild by Ashover Brew Co (3) alongside cans from the interestingly-stocked fridge of Scoundrel (2023) by Emperor's Brewery and Bailey’s Mocha Choca Flaked Truffle Stout by New Bristol Brewery. The ‘just about’ GBG cask scores seemed to be down a combination of the interior being stiflingly hot and a lack of constant turnover over the 8 sticks, the place has little ventilation. The craftykeg is self-serve via £10 voucher purchased at the bar. Odd one, the missus liked it but I felt that the generous focus on cask ale didn’t really work - do the locals really drink that much? Might be worth spending a few quid on some decent aircon, maybe. 6.5
