Great little micro with friendly and chatty staff, along with the customers. Three ales on handpump, Wilde Child Brewing Co Glutinous Maximus Sticky Toffee Milk Stout, Mrs A's choice. The two other beers were Anthology New England Session Pale and Wishbone Brown Brown Deeper & Brown. My pie was the Corn Beef Slice, which was homemade and very tasty, but slightly on the small side for the price.

A small street corner micro with limited seating and a small bar offering three handpumps with Nethergate Stour Valley,Anthology Canopy and Wishbone Velvet Gloss (NBSS 3.5) on my trip. The pies are quite modest sized thin crust but looked very good ,a sensible accompaniment to ale. There is a perilous descent to the loo but there is an overflow snug down here in the gloom.
It wont take many punters to fill the space and it will always be overshodowed by the narby Cardigan Arms but worth popping into if on a crawl.

I've been past this little pub many times on my way to Headingley for a Leeds Rhinos game, but it's always seemed full to the rafters, and anyway the Cardigan Arms is only 20 metres away. This week I was here on a non-match day, and talked my friends into giving it a try (see what I did there?), and we were more than pleasantly surprised. Three hand pumps on the bar, we tried all three between us, and it was clear why this micro has made it to the Good Beer Guide. I was particularly glad to find Linfit Old Eli, a beer once tasted at the Sair Inn at Linthwaite near Slaithwaite, and never forgotten.

We got talking to the man behind the bar, who was in fact Dave; formerly of the Grove (just south of the station, subject to an arson attack last year and not yet reopened at the time of writing) and he was able to update us on what's going on there, as he's still in touch with his former employer. Dave brought out a pork and chorizo pie cut into eight chunks, and it broke my heart to tell him three out of four of us were veggies; nothing daunted, he returned a minute later with a vegan roll, neatly sliced into three. The pies are a bit of a gimmick, it seems, but we felt privileged to be given free samples, especially as the beers were so good. (The toilet is down a steep staircase in the basement. I wouldn't suggest going to the Cardigan for recycling purposes - it's your decision.)
