The Broad Street Social is the brewery tap for the Brewsmiths Beer, based in nearby Ramsbottom. Whilst I have not been drinking in Bury since 2020, this has to be one of the better pubs/bars in the town centre.
Skipping around the police cordons to gain entry (there was some sort of crime scene in the next street with a blue tent), we arrived at the same time as a large group who I initially took to be a CAMRA branch, as they were all asking if the bar did any CAMRA discounts. However, it was only when I was served that I realised that they were actually Bradford City football fans heading to their team's pre-season friendly fixture against Bury. The barmaid explained that she had been instructed to serve customers in plastic glasses due to the football. At this point, it dawned on me that the accents I were hearing were from Yorkshire!
Broad Street appears to be in the centre of the Bury nightlife scene and despite it only being early afternoon, this bar was already attracting some large groups. A large group of lesbians arrived just as we were about to leave. One of them asked my wife if she'd been for a poo! Such is the banter in this town!
6 handpulls were dominated by Brewsmith beers. The Oatmeal Stout is a permanent fixture. Also on were their Cascade, Citra Pale and Head, Heart & Hands, a collaboration with Marble. Guest beers were Roosters Buckeye & Thirst Class Mosaic. All beers are listed on a blackboard above a fireplace close to the bar. Craft beers listed were STF Pale Ale, Thornbridge Chiron & Burning Sky Arise.
The interior is fairly simple, but quite atmospheric with walls stripped back to the brickwork. With friendly service, I quite liked this place.
