This is a nicely done shop conversion, with imaginative use of wood in the bar counter (the normal rough scaffolding boards at the side and front topped with smoothly finished slices of tree trunk) and in the table tops, and the "please respect our neighbours" notices. The sash windows at the back must have been retained from a previous existence, but their subtlety is undermined by a half scale bronze statue of a giraffe holding a light bulb by its flex. Don't try this at home.
My half of Oakham Krush was better than the name suggests (NBSS 3.5, £4.2/pint); the reversed pump clip looked like Tiny Rebel. I quite liked it here, but only having one cask beer can be a bit limiting, unless it happens to be your favourite beer in the whole world. My randomly chosen chair turned out to be the only one that revolves, which might have generated the loss of a point in my rating, if the beer hadn't been quite so good.

Part of a former co-op store near the bottom of the hill, the interior has the feel of a former butchers with its brick / tile treatment on the bar back. New flag floor and spidery metal stools and a sofa at chunky metal furniture distinguish the place as trendy. Very few tourists appeared to be in when I visited on a Saturday afternoon in June fast approaching the time of twilight (© Thomas Hardy). The two hand pumps are on the short side of the L shaped counter and due to tight furnishing not easy to read, I discerned a Tiny Rebel beer so had that, the name and strength remain a mystery but it was good, the other pump had a Goose Eye beer with pump clip reversed. Otherwise, and the locals were all on the keg, a big T-Bar has a mundane range of latin lagers, Guinness, a couple of ciders, Neck Oil and to liven it up one from Salt. Not bad but hardly cask focused and not really a kosher micro.
