The Sportsman is another bar and restaurant found on West Brom High Street, although this one is much more ‘bar’ than the others. Steps from the passing street lead up to left and right hand doors, the left leading to a small L-shaped bar that was closed during my recent Monday evening visit. The larger right-hand side has a bar counter up the left that faces a pool table to the right with some supporting columns and beer shelves in between. Seating runs along the front and also the rear where table football can be found. Cricket via TNT Sport was being aired on the televisions throughout. Open plan seating is found in a large room at the rear where a mix of diners eating from the Indian menu and just drinkers were situated. The service was polite, but only standard keg was available with the Carling coming in at £2.10 for a half.

Labelled as bar and restaurant on the front - yet I saw no evidence of a restaurant. No menus. No one eating.
I came in for curiosity, as relatives use it on match days.
Large room, with TVs and keg beers.

Referred to as a club in some places, but this definitely seems to be a pub and restaurant open to all. The main bar at the front was surprisingly busy on a Wednesday evening, as was the rear dining room, with both parts having been recently refurbished by the look of things. No real ale, unfortunately, but the keg selection included the M&B Mild (just £2.20) so that was OK with me. With the music, sports TVs and general chatter all competing, it was hardly a relaxed experience, but the service was efficient and it was good to see the place doing so well. And with football memorabilia as the main decorative theme, it must get even busier on match days I guess.
