My recent visit to the Garrison coincided with regular Thursday evening live music so there was a band set up in the front right window and the pub was heaving. Open plan seating is found in the front and seating runs up the right-hand wall opposite the serving counter where there’s also DJ equipment including a record player, music plays a very prominent role here. The walls are busy with beer and cider boards, a pizza menu, award certificates and random art. There’s another room at the rear with a beer shelf and table football, but it was being used as a storeroom, or maybe a delivery had not long arrived. There are two small toilet cubicles, a male and a female, that I don’t think is enough for a bar of this size, however the gents was free when I needed it mid set. The serving counter supports five hand pumps, three of which were in use drawing Left Handed Giant’s All Square, Vocation’s Bread & Butter and Shiny Brewery’s Live Wire. There are also some craft keg options available alongside Cruzcampo and three Hawkstone Brewery options. I went for the Live Wire that I found a bit too fruity, although I had just drunk a lager in the Byron so maybe that affected the taste. I liked it in here so will pop back in next time I’m in town.

An excellent little shop conversion, decorated in a Peaky Blinders theme for no apparent reason but it does produce a good feel to the place. Just the one large room, plus an odd table on the way to the toilets, and one (silent) sports screen which was being studiously ignored by everyone. Regular live music features but the main attraction is a good and changing selection of beers from the Moody Fox brewery (in common ownership) and various guests in both cask and craft keg form and very well kept too. Boxed ciders are also available. Undoubtedly the best place to drink in the town centre but check opening hours.
