Will Larter left this review about Castle Bar
Formerly the Conisbrough Castle Club, but now called Castle Bar, the approach is from Chapel Lane but the entrance is towards the back of the building. The door was shut when I arrived, so I walked down the steps to the garden, where the detritus of a Saturday night party was still in evidence. The (it's got to be said) spectacular building is propped on columns above the steep slope, and I could see some lights on, so returned up the steps to try the door, just as someone came out and confirmed it was open. The room with the view is to the right, but the bar here was shuttered, and a smaller bar in one of the two smaller but very smart back rooms was available for service - or would have been if the server had not been sat down with her mates. She jumped up to get me a beer - a half of Tetleys Smooth, which was not as bad as some I have had - and addressed me as "my lovely", which is the only consolation of old age, so far. I went and sat in the second room, where horse racing was being shown on a TV screen. I wouldn't make an effort to come back here, but I can see it would have its attractions to local people, and at least provides some of the answer as to why the Alma, less than five minutes walk away, was absolutely dead when I called in there next.
