The Cannon can be found on the main A-road passing through Newton Poppleford. Despite its prominent location, it closes each afternoon during the week. Indeed, we were aiming to get there before 2:30pm closing, only to get caught in the narrow lane from Branscombe.

As luck would have it, we walked through the left-hand door into the lounge/dining room just as the bell was being rung for last orders. The landlady was still happy to serve us.

Cask ales are served by gravity from behind the bar, which has a rather worn feel and features pumpclips above it. The 2 ales being served were Otter Bitter & Sharp's Twin Coast. I opted for the latter, which I was pleasantly surprised by. WhatPub says that there is a discount for CAMRA members, but I didn't see anything promoting that and didn't enquire either.

In addition, there were several bag-in-the-box ciders - Lilley's Apples & Pears, Sunset Cider, Firefly & Bee Sting Perry, Broadoak Kingston Black & Moonshine, Weston's Old Rosie & Thatcher's Stan's Cheddar Valley. Sharp's Atlantic was also on keg, as well as Thatcher's Gold.

I didn't get to explore the bar which is on the right-hand side as you enter, but the lounge had stripped back walls and only 3 other customers, 2 of whom were finishing their meals. However, a couple of others left as we had arrived. They had been playing in the pub's own skittle alley.

The ladies toilets are inside, but the gents are outside to the rear where there was also a garden containing a pizza oven. As we were sat there, a guy came rushing in and seemingly caught short walked into the ladies. On his way back out, the landlady tried to speak to him, but he ignored her and headed straight out of the door, much to her disdain. Perhaps there are no toilets along this stretch of road! Soon after the owners' friendly dog also made an appearance.

A beer festival was advertised for the August Bank Holiday weekend and as we left, we noticed another board promoting a pizza evening.

We found this to be a friendly pub and were glad we made the effort to get here before it closed for the afternoon.

Large, traditional Edwardian pub by side of main road with bar one side and lounge the other; garden and skittle alley, also used for functions, at rear. A couple of good ales from the barrel but it is the food that takes the pub up a level, with enormous portions of very tasty fare. Good range of entertainments at intervals too. A proper pub.

A two roomer with the main action in the right hand side. Multicoloured pub carpet, burnt orange fabric banquettes, whisky mirrors, darts, fireplace and a collection of phalluses (don’t ask me why) hanging up at the bar. A number of locals were playing dominoes but despite the outward gentility, there was a fairly robust atmosphere with the full cornucopia of cuss-words getting a liberal airing. Two ales from gravity - Exmoor Gold (fine) and Hobgoblin Gold - as well as two boxes of cider in Westons and Hogans. Felt a bit out-of-place here, like we were intruding on a private party. Best left to the locals and their particular idiosyncrasies. 5.5
