The Bar at The Atheneum, Mayfair, W1

An up-market hotel bar on Picadilly, which only let us in just after midnight as we were in black tie and clearly not a threat as far as the well-dressed doormen were concerned. The décor and ambience are intended to impress the wealthy. No bar service, we were asked to sit down and give our order. No cask ale or cider, so we went for the unnamed IPA which tasted quite zingy but was served far too cold for my liking. The alternative would have been one of their (Piccadilly-) club-standard cocktails or one of around 100 different whiskies. It was quiet, a bit lifeless but fine as cocktail bars go, though it certainly doesn’t fit the pub genre. I shouldn’t include in a crawl and it’s not worth coming here just for the extraordinarily expensive beer, though it might make a good treat for a whisky aficionado with a bottomless wallet.
