Recently reopened after a substantial interior renovation, this pub was previously known as Famous George, but it has now reverted to its original name. It’s in the town centre opposite another pub, so it offers a better pub experience than the new tourist-focussed bars on the sea front. They had intended to be food-led, but when we visited they hadn’t been able to recruit any kitchen staff, so it is effectively a wet-led pub at present. That said, they suggested we bring in a takeaway from the nearby chip shop, which was a welcome gesture. There is an outside seating area at the front, mainly occupied by smokers. Dogs are permitted inside, so that’s where we sat – the landlady said she was much happier having dogs inside than children. The single large bar has been redecorated with fake beams, exposed ceiling timbers and parquet floors. Three ales on, Otter Bitter, Proper Job and Sea Fury, all in good condition, plus a standard choice of kegs. An enjoyable visit to a decent pub, but nothing extraordinary.

Nice location - classic pub interior, with some exterior seating.

Helpful and friendly staff.

Disappointing Otter Ale - which I know can be a cracking pint when well kept.
