The Crafty Fox opened several years back on the main road through Old Colwyn. I'd visited most of Old Colwyn's pubs many years back, including the soon to re-open Sun Inn, but this was my first visit to Old Colwyn's first micropub.
The pub has taken over two former retail units. The main bar is to the left-hand side. The second room is a former butcher's shop. A set of weighing scales still sits in this room but a pool table dominates it. You can reach it through a set of curtains and along a short corridor.
The main bar has bare boards with the bar itself against the rear wall. Coach House Farriers Best Bitter is the regular cask ale. Guest beers were Heritage Charrington IPA. 4T's Tripwire & Facer's Plum Porter. There was a bag-in-the-box Dee Cider in a fridge behind the bar and I also spotted Lilley's Select & Lilley's Rhubarb Cider. Weekend Project Tegg's Nose was the keg beer.
I quite enjoyed my visit here. The landlord initially seemed a bit of a grump but quietly listening to his conversation with a couple of locals, he soon came across instead as a rather astute publican with a very good knowledge of his clientele. Dogs are allowed in and I received another slobbering.
I am partial to a micropub and I like any pubs that serve a changing range of beers, the more adventurous the better. For me, this is easily the pick of Old Colwyn's pubs.

Standard Micro shop conversion which stretches into the next building, where there is a pool table.
The beer range was quite pedestrian for a micro - nothing international noted, no fruit beers for Mrs M and some cask - most from Coach House Brewery (if I remember the name correctly).
Quite busy for a Friday afternoon. Not sure if this is down to the place itself or lack of alternatives in the area.

Single room micro though signage is on the adjacent building so don't be fooled! Laminate floor, stone effect wallpaper, white ceiling and some dried hops – standard micro decor. Five ales and some interesting kegs. I (foolishly, given the searing heat) went for the Big Bog Quagmire (NBSS 2 – not pulled for a long while) and 4Ts Tripwire (3.5). Classic micropub fail in that the guy behind the bar was monosyllabic and made no attempt to smile and make us feel welcome, so it was a slightly awkward 20 minutes. It’s worth a nose but the Red Lion is a better bet.
