A good boozer opposite the market hall. Open plan with a largish outside drinking area at the rear. 6 handpulls with a good variety of styles available. All decked out for an Oktoberfest theme on my visit. Outdoor pavement seating at the front. I liked this pub and would be happy to return.

My first visit here, though I got such a strong feeling of deja vu on entering that I had to check my notes from previous years when I got home! It was quite loud, with some Motown on the sound system. I had a good laugh with one of the lasses working here about what a jolly, uplifting tune the Velvettes' Needle in a Haystack is, when you stop to think that the lyrics are all about how bloody awful some men can be. The beer was also good, with six hand pumps advertising beers from local breweries (Howard Town, Beartown, Poynton and Empire). I like a pub to play good music with enthusiasm, not just to take the edge off an uncomfortable silence, but if I'd been in company I'd have been moving on because I couldn't hear myself speak. As it was, I had an enjoyable quarter of an hour and would be happy to try this one again.

Visited again on Friday afternoon. Still has six hand pulls for real ale, one of which was off at the time of my visit, the others offering Angel Bitter (house ale), Tiny Rebel Cwtch, two by Empire (a mild and a porter), and an IPA that I couldn't get a good enough view of the pump clip to note the brewery.
I had the Pandemonium Porter by Empire which I think set me back £3.80 for the pint - and this was very pleasant. Service was friendly and welcoming.
Music was playing, and there is a beer garden to the rear. There may also have been some tables to the front.
