A nice old-fashioned local in a sea of mid-20th century housing; a ‘country pub in the suburbs’ if you will. Despite a couple of botchy old refurbishments the essence is still good, two rooms with almost everyone in the carpeted lounge. Décor of white walls, tongue and groove wood ceiling with black trim. Ale pumps in both bars with a choice of GK OSH, Dartmoor Jail and St Austell Proper Job - the latter of which seemed to be the local's choice and a decent pint (NBSS 3.5) it was. Two ciders as well. Mature clientele, I was probably the third youngest if you count the friendly young barmaid. A bit of a PITA to get to but worth it if you’ve got the time, or you’ve done Jannertown centre before.

This really is the best pub in Plymouth, a "country pub" atmosphere within (fairly) easy reach of the city centre. Numerous well-deserved CAMRA awards, friendly locals, good if limited selection of pub food at lunchtime (with the emphasis on PUB food...ie the traditional offerings, definitely not a gastro-pub!). There are a few tables outside if you have children with you with a pleasant outlook. And on the first Thursday of (nearly) every month there is a good-natured, well-attended pub quiz- but get there early if you want to take part because this is a SMALL pub and you may end up standing all night otherwise...not a good idea with all those fantastic real ales on offer!
