Brick built pub next to a railway bridge and opposite the former Lichfield brewery. Partly Open plan on two levels but the remaining walls provide a number of discrete areas. Nicely furnished with banquettes and iron based tables, a screen shows ads and what beers are on, another shows the train times at the nearby Lichfield City station. 10 pulls with a mix of four Black Country Ales plus five from others, Salopian, Langton, Castle Eden, Coach House and Snails Bank. Large ham & egg pie slices and big crusty cobs are available.

The ‘wrong way’ from town and the interchange which means it’s ideal as the start or end point of a crawl; we picked it as our start point. Recently taken on by BCA and it follows their usual template of 3-4 of their brews alongside several guest ales (four today) and big cobs (or rolls!) in comfortable and traditional surroundings. This one has a slightly unusual double depth layout which worked rather well I thought and we bagged a seat by the crackling fire. My slurps of BCA PotW was good (NBSS 3.5) as was the Fownd Porter. In a nod to their location as the nearest pub to the station, there’s a train departure board. A strong BCA outlet and a guaranteed GBG pick for next year, Rated 8.5
