The Head of Steam has seating, televisions, two dartboards, a pool table, two pinball machines and a shuffleboard table past the entrance at street level before steps that climb to the bar area where there’s an island bar with a tile floored apron that edges onto the wooden flooring that runs throughout. More televisions with live sports are found throughout and beer shelves run up the right-hand wall. Behind the island bar are a couple of rows of thick wooden tables with padded benches and booths run along the rear wall. In the front right corner is a separate raised seating area that had been hired out for a private party during a recent Wednesday evening visit. Premium and mainstream craft keg options are available from the counter that was also supporting cask options of Green Duck Beer Co’s Shore Line and Meltdown, Titanic’s Steerage, Northern Monk’s Mills Hills and SUP, Vocation Brewery’s Naughty & Nice Honeycomb Crunch Chocolate Stout and the Head of Steam Gold. I’d had a few lagers so decided to have a Jubel which set me back nearly £8, that’ll learn me! I thought the service was miserable and there was no atmosphere even though there were a few people in. There are better, and cheaper, options nearby.

A terraced town centre pub with a lower patio area to inhale car exhausts. This is a multi level pub and eatery, with some large TVs for sport, music at a reasonable level and some trainy stuff on the walls - other than a townscape feature wall. A central island bar serves several real ales as well as interesting craft stuff. Good service and a good, mixed clientele. Had a Green Duck Coco Motion Stout that was decent -despite, forgive the pun, losing its head pretty quickly. I have been a few times and will happily go back.

Four years have passed since my previous visit, so I was pleased to call in again earlier this month. Different sections and levels with the almost-outdoors lower seating area, then the main bar up the steps, then a further level to the front inside. The central island bar sported seven available cask options, with a mix of styles represented.
Service was friendly, albeit there was a small delay in being served as it seemed that not everyone behind the bar was actually serving customers.
I went for Green Duck The Storm (4.6% stout) and Meanwood New Normal (5.6% old ale) - both pleasant but The Storm was more to my taste.
Friendly service and decent ale selection means this will be on the cards for a return visit.
