We'd phoned in advance to make sure this micropub was open at lunchtime on a Tuesday. We had unfortunately neglected to check that they still sell real ale...

We were greeted by the owner, having a crafty fag on the front step. "You're not here for real ale are you?", were the words with which we were met. It turns out that people in Goldthorpe are not interested in real ale. She tried three hand pumps, but ended up throwing lots of beer away. Two hand pumps - same story. Did you try one hand pump, asked one of my mates. Had to throw it away, was the reply.

The pub itself is what used to be the entrance to the cinema, which was a shed-like building behind this row of houses, shops and offices on Goldthorpe's main street. The nearby pub is shut and boarded up, leaving only this and the Rusty Dudley, which is also keg only, to serve Goldthorpe. I hesitate to call a place a dump, but was sorely tempted in this instance.
