I was intrigued as to what this pub would be like. Only open 4 days a week and only from 5pm on 3 of those days, I arrived at the right time to pay it a visit.

I was expecting something similar to Ye Olde Cider Bar in Newton Abbot. So naturally, I was a little disappointed in what I found. The interior is basic with barrels for tables and a limited number of stools for seating. The walls are painted a peach colour and several pillars have horse brasses on them. There was a fruit machine in one corner. Ladies toilets were signposted upstairs. There was perhaps further seating on that floor.

Overspill seating can be found to the front, overlooking the harbour. Fairly loud pop music was playing inside. My visit was on a Wednesday, which is supposed to be Open Mic night. Luckily I was too early for that but bar staff were taking it in turns to stand outside promoting the venue. It felt a little like San Antonio in Ibiza. Incidentally, Thursday is live music night, whilst DJs appear on Friday and Saturday nights.

The bar has 5 handpulls. However, cask ale was discontinued many years ago. All pulls were clipped with ciders but none were anything new to me - Lilley's Somerset Scrumpy Dry, Sunset & Mango Cider & Hunt's Wobbler & Bull Walloper. There are many more bottles in the fridges behind the bar too.

I did quite enjoy my Bull Walloper, which was sweet and very drinkable, despite being 7.2%. However, don't go here thinking this is a traditional west country cider bar. It's more of a late night drinking den that happens to major on cider.

The Cider Press is a small quayside bar with a bar counter along the right wall that faces open plan barrel tables and very uncomfortable ‘Jack Daniels’ branded high stools. Some stairs lead up but I was the only customer during a recent midweek visit so I didn’t investigate. The décor is mainly wood with some horse brasses thrown in. Live music is advertised for every Thursday evening, during my stay the background music was mainstream club from the 2000’s. The bar supports standard keg alongside Pravha and the five hand pumps were drawing three ciders from Lilley’s and two from Sheppy’s. the barman was polite, but I didn’t rate this place so will walk past next time.

A lovely GII listed quayside building but don't be fooled by the name, there are only three ciders in here and all pretty mainstream - 2x Cornish Orchards and Westons. Essentially it's a small room with whitewashed stone walls and an upstairs area. Freezing cold with the door propped open (all the staff were wrapped up like Eskimos) and no other punters, bar a gaggle of girls who came in, went for a wazz and promptly walked out. Two ales on; Bay Topsail was awful and taken off. Doom Bar was better but came in a plastic cup. Absolutely dire, even the staff were taking the piss about how bad it was. The worst pub I’ve been in this year? Possibly.
