As described below, this establishment is architecturally impressive and very well located, convenient for the City and for QAB. However, since being taken over by Miller and Carter, the offering is significantly worse. Food is their standard steakhouse menu, and there is no real ale anymore. The 'greeter', a rather supercilious young man, offered us bottled Doombar and Neck Oil, while only keg lager was available on tap. This has not been a change for the better, and there are better choices nearby.

Blackthorn _ left this review about China House
A good sized pub overlooking the harbour, it was presumably at one time involved in the china industry in some shape or other and there are a few reminders of this inside such as a montage of china cups and jugs affixed to the wall as well as a few lamp shades made from china tea pots and such like.
Internally it’s quite impressive architecturally and is divided in to a number of different areas with wooden balustrade and so on, with broadly similar décor throughout. The flooring is predominantly old flagstones, with carpeting in some of the periphery areas, and there is much exposed stonework. In fact, it has something of the feel of an old mill inside, with exposed timber joists holding up the upper floors and iron supporting pillars. Where there wasn’t an upper floor, the pub opened out in to a double height space, and glimpses of the attractive timbered roof were visible. Elsewhere an interesting feature is a conical stone chimney in the centre of the pub which was presumably part of a kiln or something similar at one time. A fire was blazing away underneath this.
Beers were all reasonably local with Sharps Atlantic and Doom Bar, Tribute and Proper Job. Ciders were Rosie’s Pig, Cornish Orchards and Thatcher’s Gold. All in all, a great renovation of an old building and well worth checking out.
