With our final venue, the Davenham Cricket Club closed for some reason, the Salty Dog ended up being our last new pub of the day. Walking through Northwich's pedestrianised streets felt like being in a ghost town, with most businesses closed and with just the local youths on bikes smashing bottles for company. It was good to find the town's Good Beer Guide entry open as per published times.
First impressions were good. We walked into the dark and moody interior to find an impressive ale range on the bar. Boards to the side list the wares. There are 4 handpulls. Merlin Gold is the regular beer. For us, there were a couple of guests - Riverhead Floating Light & Salopian Unfinished Business. A fourth handpull had a reversed clip for Hush Simcoe. Craft beers were Tiny Rebel Coal Drop, Ossett Punch Rat, Brew York Time Travelling Taxi & Wild Child Opaque Reality. The cider was Appleshed. The number of pumpclips behind the bar and on the ceiling suggest that there is an ever changing range. A 20p/pint discount is offered from cask ales for CAMRA card holders.
This is primarily a rock bar with framed film and music posters on the walls. Live music is performed on a stage to the right-hand side. Beyond the stage, a corridor leads to the toilets and a further room to the rear.
Metal had been playing when we arrived but it wasn't to my liking. When a live band started warming up, the noise was quite annoying and I had to drink up quickly to get out of there. I quite enjoy some rock/heavy metal but this was not my cup of tea. For a beer, I chose the stout from Salopian. Whilst being fine, I've never found Salopian's dark beers quite as good as their pales.
Dogs are allowed in here. Although I wouldn't suggest bringing one in when a live band is playing! A wifi code is available adjacent to the bar.
This appears to be one of Northwich's best pubs/bar. Although it was somewhat spoiled for us by the racket being created from the live band. I read that live music is performed weekly. Trust us to choose that particular night!

The Salty Dog has ‘Tatton Brewery’ etched into the glass in the door and front window so it wasn’t surprising to see their KBA, XPA and Gold available. The forth hand pump was drawing RedWillow’s Headless and there are craft keg options. Feeling like a double shop conversion, the interior is in two sections, split by a half-length dividing wall. The bar counter is on the rear wall to the left and a stage set up with band equipment, including a bass drum emblazoned with ‘Salty Dog’, is on the rear wall to the right. Tables and chairs are dotted around the front floorboard area. A short corridor at the rear passes the two unisex cubicles on its way to a seating area at the rear that houses a couple of arcade machines. The walls in this rear area are plastered with old gig flyers. Rock music was playing in the background during my recent midweek evening visit when there were a handful of middle aged men present. I bet this place gets a bit cosy when a band is playing, and although this isn’t the biggest place I think the having only two toilet cubicles must cause issue at busy times. I wasn’t that keen on the Tatton Gold, the XPA was better, but I still wasn’t a fan. They both tasted quite earthy, much like Shepherd Neame who I also don’t really like.

The main front area is partially divided with the bar to the rear left and a fully kitted out stage for live music to the rear right. Green walls and ceiling, the walls are liberally covered in band and gig flyers. Beyond the stage a corridor links past the toilets to a tiled floor area with a bar football table and a pair of video gaming machines. Outdoor area beyond. Four handpumps with a local slant, two from Tatton, Gold and Lazy Haze, Great Heck Navigator and Merlin Excalibor. Monday's have a £2 deal on real ales.Food limited to snack pies and quiches.
I didn't see a TV but low volume metal music played I reckon it cranks up in the evening.
A welcome addition to Northwich town centre.
