A recent opening in the popular and ever expanding foodie hub that is Whapping Wharf, this is a combined coffee shop and bar somewhat similar to Hunter & Sons in Bath. Although you can presumably buy either coffee or beer at any time, it has much more of a coffee shop vibe during the day and then opens later in to the evening Wednesday – Saturday when the beer takes on more of a focus.
Internally it’s all one large open plan place with high ceilings and dual aspect windows to make the most of the outlook that includes views across the water to the Lloyds amphitheatre. Flooring is pale wood strip whilst the walls are a mixture of bare screed and white plasterwork. Seating is a mixture of bar stools and wooden benches, many of these placed in front of the windows. Numerous candles were dotted around, and the bar counter included a selection of cakes as befits the coffee shop side of the business. There were plenty of pot plants around as well as a small number of items such as coffee and tea for sale.
Although there was no obvious sign of any beer pumps, the large menu behind the bar indicated that there were three draught options and the friendly barman gave a brief description of each, although I assume they were all keg rather than cask. On this occasion they were a Keller Pilsner, Left Handed Giant’s Pale Duet and Milk Stout. Cider was only available bottled, but Hoxton’s Bristol Draught was pretty decent. Overall, not a conventional pub by any means, but a handy pit stop if you’re exploring this upcoming and vibrant part of Bristol’s harbourside.
