I'd somehow missed visiting this brewery/tap on my last visit to Cartmel in the summer of 2015. So, I diverted here on my latest trip to Cumbria.

The brewery is hidden away in a courtyard. It shares the courtyard with other bars, a pizza shop and another delicatessen-type venue. We initially walked into another bar and wondered where all the beers were. Luckily we soon realised our error and continued around the corner to find the brewery.

The brewing equipment, the bar itself, fridges and shelves stocking bottled beers/local spirits and also the toilets take up pretty much all of the available space indoors. So, all seating is outside in the courtyard. The area can be covered and there are patio heaters for inclement weather. Maybe a very small number of tables are moved indoors in the winter?

The only two cask ales available from the brewery when we arrived were Sir Edgar Harrington's Last Wolf & Sir William Marshal's Crusader. A pumpclip for their Eel River was half turned with the fourth handpull clipped with a guest beer, the locally ubiquitous Swan Blonde from Bowness Bay. The bartender (possibly also the brewer) was quite busy, probably changing the Eel River. When I tried to order it, he said it was off. Although he had it poured through by the time we left but being on a tight schedule, I had to settle for the Crusader. It was not really my type of beer but was in a perfectly fine condition, as you would expect. A CAMRA discount is available but not actively promoted.

I'd actually never tried an Unsworth's Yard beer until my previous pub in Grange-over-Sands. The two I ended up having were fine but whilst the outdoor seating was quite pleasant in the sunshine, I'm not sure what it would feel like on a chilly winter's evening. A place to drink without the feel of a pub.

This brewery is part of a group of buildings which have been put to new uses: there's also a bakery, a cheese shop and a wine seller. The yard itself has been fashioned into a very pleasant garden, with seats, tables and stone benches. Inside, there is the brewery and a small shop where gift packs or individual bottles can be bought. The shop counter also doubles as a bar - possibly the smallest I have ever seen, with three hand pumps. The brewery produces a number of beers in fairly standard styles - nothing outlandish but all eminently drinkable. All beers, whether draught, or poured from a bottle, or carried away, are priced at £3.00 a pint (or per 50cl bottle). I was here one morning in July, when I had one of the earliest beers I have ever drunk, on my way to the railway station at Cark. The owner/brewer/barman was friendly, welcoming and informative. On a later visit, on Bank Holiday Monday in August for the local race meeting, there was quite a crowd here but everyone behaved in a civilised manner and there was none of the rip-off price increases that are seen in the other village pubs at such times. I saw people buying wine from one shop, bread and cheese from another, and beer from the brewery, and making impromptu picnics in the yard. Marvellous!
