Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Hop Gate
Once you have located the alleyway entrance, you find a modern craft beer bar which does also do cask ale (albeit with just one of four gravity taps in operation when I visited). The split-level layout has fairly rustic, alehouse-style furniture and decor, but the music was rather more contemporary. Although not immediately obvious, there is more seating up some more steps to side of the counter. Looking for a dark beer, I went for the (keg) Fat Stout from Mad Hatter (£4.50) which was fine (but seemed expensive, although I suspect that it was rather more potent than originally anticipated).

The Hop Gate is as Rob says situated down an alley off Sadler Gate.
Once inside there is a small snug to the right with wood bench seating, there are normal tables and chairs in the lower area, the bar is up three steps to the left, there are tables and barrels to sit on in this small area.
There is a stone floor and the left wall is bare brick with the other being plastered.
There are lots of keg craft beers on which i am not bothered about, but there were two real ales on from taps behind the bar,i had a drink of Instant Kharma Saffron Kasayo which was a decent drink, the other real ale was Milestone Pekwig.
There was decent background music playing and the friendly bar woman took the clips off so i could get the proper name for the beer i tried.
I found this to be a cosy and comfortable pub to have a drink in.

A small, wood panelled bar, down an alley off Sadlergate. Owned by the same people who have the Barrel Drop in Nottingham. 14 craft kegs lines and 4 dispensing cask. There's a small snug area to the left and the rest is a split level room with high tables and chairs. It was very busy on my Saturday night visit and sadly the barman was clueless. I ordered a pint of Black IPA and was served a pint of a pale beer. I pointed out that this wasn't a Black IPA as it wasn't black. The idiot behind the bar said "That's what a Black IPA looks like mate", errrr, no it isn't. However the pint was in good nick whatever it was. I'll call in again next time we're in Derby to see how it's settled down. I suspect the bar idiot will no longer be there.
