Walking from what should have been my penultimate pub of a lengthy circuit of Durham, I caught sight of a banner affixed to a wall, proclaiming the Kingslodge to be "The Best Pub in Durham". At first I was inclined to move on, but then I considered the time available before my train, only one more pub to do, and this one only a two minute walk away, so decided to give it a try. As it turns out, yes, it's a hotel, but they've done a pretty good job of making it something like a pub. And a fairly decent one at that. But it is certainly not the best pub in Durham. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and there were two real ales available. My half of Bowland Brewery's Boxer Blonde was in very good condition (Doom Bar was the alternative), so for anyone with a few minutes to kill before their train, this would be a decent option.

Yes, it's a hotel, but a decent one. Enter through the rear and the bar is to the left with two hand pumps and a strongish cider. Eating to the left, drinking to the right.
