Blue Scrumpy left this review about Adelphi Club

The New Adelphi Club is probably the most iconic music venue in Hull. I found it difficult to establish regular opening hours but found that there was a series of bands due to play on our Saturday stay in Hull with a combined entrance price of £12. There was no way I wanted to pay to enter a pub but I was encouraged to hear that there is a separate front room available for those not wishing to attend a gig.

Advice from another pub was that this particular night would only allow admission with the £12 fee but if I rocked up around 10:15, it's likely that I'd get in for free as the door staff would have given up and the pub would still be open. Leave it any later and we'd risk it being closed if there were few punters.

We duly turned up at 10:15. This venue is in a really unassuming location in the middle of a terraced street. We spotted what looked like a barmaid exiting a side door and headed on in, only to be pounced upon by another member of staff. Luckily, he was happy to allow us in without paying a fee, as it was so late in the day.

The aforementioned front bar appeared to be closed. So, we ended up in a room with a stage. With 4 handpulls, it was disappointing to find only one clipped with Bristol Beer Factory Peak Valley. Keg beers included Camden Pale & Stout, Beavertown Lunar Haze & Tiny Rebel Cali Pale.

The guy who pounced on us had mentioned that some loud dance music was about to start, which we said we were fine with. As we were getting served, a guy with a mask and helmet combo was next to us at the bar. I took this to be a sign that customers here were a little on the eccentric side but this turned out to be the keyboard player.

As we took our seats, the band commenced. It included a DJ/singer, a drummer and a saxophonist and the member of staff wasn't wrong. It suddenly came very noisy. Memories of loud student nights and following mornings with tinnitus came flooding back as all of the other customers turned the room into a dancefloor with the audience adopting some fairly crazy dance routines.

Apparently this was a local dance group called Endoflevelbaddie who were finishing off the gig. I quite enjoyed the experience with my wife not appreciating it as much.

From what I can see, this place is open Thursday-Sunday evenings and does not charge an entry fee when there is no act on. Alternatively you can do what we did and bunk in towards the end of the night when door staff have given up. A fairly unusual but enjoyable experience from which the tinnitus did indeed result.
