Casks sit on stillage in the left-hand side of the Station House behind a windowed wooden internal wall with a serving hatch, yes, it is cold in there. The available ale and ciders are hung on string down either side of the hatch, there were four cider and four ale options, the letter being Abbeydale’s Through the Hopback, North Riding Brewery’s Mosaic Pale, TT Boltmaker and Vibrant Forest Brewery’s Porter. There’s also a fridge with craft cans, though heaven knows why anyone would look in the fridge. Across the rear wall are some long high tables opposite a table with two rocking chairs, I tried one, but it made me feel sick, so I moved to one of the long tables. To the right is some sunken seating and I didn’t venture upstairs so not sure what’s up there. The friendly service and great beer mean that I will be visiting here again when next in the area.

My first visit here since my review of three years ago, and this time I was sufficiently competent to say that this is a tremendous pub. It's uniquely laid out, in my experience, with the beers on stillage behind the serving hatch, necessarily at such a low temperature that the server is obliged to sit outside in the customer area when not actually decanting beers into glasses. So the server spends a lot of time with the customers, in the true spirit of the micropub ethos. I was less concerned by this at the time, than by the quality of the beers, served directly from the casks.
My half of Theakston Old Peculier was perfect (NBSS 5, £5.10/pint), in that I have known this beer in many circumstances for more than 50 years and cannot imagine it being any better. The Ossett Silver King, my other half on a half hour visit on the way to the train, was different from other experiences of this beer as it is usually served with a tight sparkler in West Yorkshire. So it was different but eye-opening, like drinking your favourite beer at a beer festival, but in a good way (NBSS 4, £4.90/pint). This was my final pub of the day but I hope I was sober enough to recognise a great pub serving great beer, and I shook hands with the owner as I left, because I know how important it is to be appreciated in the pub trade. Definitely worth the price of a train fare from almost anywhere, but do check the opening times first.

Before this visit I'd only been to two pubs in Durham, several years ago, and this was my 14th in one day. It opened in 2015, as my notes made at the time say, so wasn't open when I was in Durham before, and its proximity to the station had made it a shoo-in for last pub of the day. This is a micropub, with the beers dispensed through a hatch on the door of the stillage area where the beers and ciders are kept. Four ales and four ciders, as the pump clips on rails either side of the hatch made clear. The owner was having a beer himself after serving me, though he already had several customers in the pub. He was very friendly and welcoming, and there was a good atmosphere to the place. I would have appreciated the pub and beer more if they had been my first of the day, but it doesn't open until 4pm midweek (closed Monday, 2pm Friday). My notes, despite how many beers I'd drunk, can be read to the extent I know that my half of Hops & Dots Kanye Best ESB 5% was in very good condition.
