Hidden away in an industrial/business park area of Battersea, the brewery and tap for Mondo has quite a nice feel to it inside with exposed brick walls. Situated just in front of the brewery itself, the taproom has its bar against the far wall with taps on the wall itself. A couple of TVs were showing live Premier League football with the sound off. Music was playing instead.

There was no obvious cask or KeyKeg beers. So the range appeared to be all keg - Mondo Dennis Hopp'r, Road Soda, Little Victories, Machina, Texas Whistle, Dishoom, Humble & Matineee Idol, Magnify Maine Event, Tired Hands HopHands, Athletic Run Wild & Porterhouse Plan Porter. The cider was Hogs Back Hazy Hog. In addition, a fridge to the side of the bar was stocked with various other cans and bottles.

I'm not sure if there was a food offering for my visit. A machine on the left of the bar said that it should contain homemade empanadas, but it was empty.

Further tables could be found outside. They were quite popular on what was a sunny day. In fact, I was the only customer sat inside. Both comedy and quiz nights were advertised.

Of the two brewery taps I tried on a Saturday visit to Battersea, this was the better. I tried the Matinee Idol, which was a sour stout. I'm not sure that is a concept that I have tried previously, but it was quite enjoyable.

Dodging the April showers I made my way to Mondo’s tap room from Distortion, annoyed with myself that I neglected to take a photo of the front of the still un-photographed Distortion! Glad I did not volte face as I got here just before another downpour.

Can’t add anything to the forensically accurate description from PSM below other than nothing seems to have changed over the 4 years and a global pandemic in between. Checking my records, I started the evening of the date of PSM’s review with a pint of Brakespear’s Gravity in the Flying Horse on Wilson St over in the City.

Looking at prior reviews, realise how much these tap rooms polarise opinion - to get a 7-3-9 from three esteemed reviewers in succession illustrates that. Guess it is a matter of true personal preference.

There were 14 taps operational on my visit (see photo). I opted from a pint of the Road Soda, a New England pale ale, as only had previously tried in bottles. Was a nice drink but didn’t enjoy as much as the prior Distortion quaff.

Apart from having to meet the missus back at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on Southbank in a short while, the “can’t decide what it wants to do” soundtrack would have driven me out of here before consuming too many more. Would happily have settled for pure punk or pure heavy metal, not a mix of something for everyone!

Walking here from Queenstown Road station on a cold, wet, dark evening, passing through monotonous residential and industrial estates, I started to question what exactly I was doing here, but after what felt like an eternity, I finally saw the A-board on the pavement and was able to duck inside this cosy little taproom that adjoins the Mondo Brewery. It’s a simple, rectangular room with a concrete floor, grey walls and a bare brick partitioning wall which screens the bar from the brewery, although several windows allow you to take a peek through to see what’s going on inside. High tables and stools have been formed into a row through the centre of the room, whilst fixed canteen-style benches service the front and left-hand sections of the room and a few upturned barrels and high stools fill in any remaining gaps. Lots of potted plants in the window sills and on various shelves help add a bit of colour to the room and further efforts to create a homely feel include the provision of scatter cushions for the benches, hop-lined ceiling beams and many fairy lights strung around the top of the walls. The servery is to the rear of the room and has a thick, chunky wood counter and bare brick bar back with the beer taps set into the back wall. Merchandise was displayed on a shelf above the bar and a TV screen to one side lists all of the beers currently available. Elsewhere, I spotted a popcorn machine and there was a pillar next to my seat which had been signed by various visiting brewers, with the latest such visitor asking me to move for a minute whilst he added his scribble to the collection.
The TV screen listed 13 Mondo brews on keg tap plus a cider, although typically, the beer I chose spluttered its last breath as it was being poured, forcing me to consult the list again. I eventually plumped for a pint of the Little Victories (£5.00) which the friendly barmaid said was an excellent choice and I have to say it turned out to be a very enjoyable pint.
This isn’t the easiest place to get to and nor is it likely to attract the traditional cask ale drinker, but as these industrial estate brewery bars go, I thought this place was pretty good. They’ve done well to set up something that has a nice, welcoming, homely feel to it and whilst it’s unlikely I’ll be passing through here again anytime soon, I would nevertheless be more than happy to call in again.
