Visited back in April on a Thursday afternoon. Seven hand pulls at the bar and all were on. Several appealing options for me to choose from! My half of Greetings Night Owls (a 6% stout by Pentrich) set me back £2.30; the lower ABV beers were cheaper. I was offered the option of a handled mug, which I think is a nice touch as some people love them and others seem less keen.

It was a warm day when I visited, resulting in the outdoor searing being very busy, and the inside was less busy, for a change. This meant I was able to grab one of the booths, which are decked out in the style of a mock train carriage.

I've been several times and I just can't fault the place. A definite favourite when in Wigan.

Perfect little micro - hosted in the railway arches next to North Western. Ticks all my boxes - an interesting selection of cask and international keg, with an electronic scoreboard to chose from.

Abbeydale Black Mass IPA chosen. The last time I had this was at a similar train station micro in Huddersfield . There is something about train travel that requires > 6% ales.

Table service available if you lift the little railway signal on each table. A gimmick that no one was taking advantage of!

Swift pint before the train. Firing on all cylinders tonight and my Does Nessie Like Haggis by Lees Boilerhouse is in great shape (NBSS 4). Will definitely make sure to get in here again next time, it’s excellent.

Railway theme pub under the arches. Lovely carriage-style bar and train compartment style booths. Rail paraphernalia a-plenty on the walls and the left side has a fake ticket office booth. Scree floor with rail tracks and some little signals on the table you can raise for service - the RATs would love it. Inevitably the departure times for both stations are displayed on an electronic screen. A minor let down was the cask; whilst neither of our beers (Bank Top Signal and Clag by Clay Brow) were below-par, they were both a bit standard (2x NBSS 3) despite the swift turnover. maybe we were unlucky. Plenty of cider and bottled offerings in addition, so you could easily stay all day. My visit was fleeting as I’d got lost in time at the Swan, but I saw enough to entice me back in next time. GBG’23 listed. Rated 8.5
