An unsuspected treat, this looks nothing like a pub when approached from the town centre: a nursing home, a social club, even upmarket apartments were the possibilities that crossed my mind. Then I caught a glimpse of the familiar Sam Smiths keg boxes on the bar, and the penny dropped. This is one of Sam's museum quality heritage pubs - though it doesn't look like an original pub; Camra describe it as "social club style". Whatever, it's a work of art from the outside, and absolutely stunning inside. There are snugs, lounges, dining rooms and a magnificent games room with not just two pool tables but a snooker table too. Only keg beers on the bar, but the Dark Mild was not too cold and not particularly frothy either. One to come back to, I think.
