Barbara’s Bier Haus, Cardiff

Ticked off this German theme bar on the row of bars and eateries that is Mill Lane near the St David’s Centre. Was doing a roaring trade on my brief visit around 4pm with the entrance to the front outside seating area already manned by security staff. Given the nice weather the outside space was well occupied and it meant the bar itself was v busy but tolerable for a short stay.

The inside has been styled (if it is appropriate to use that word here) on a Bavarian cabin, with lots of light, varnished wood, dominating the look and feel of the venue. Seating in the various areas generally small benches. Lighting is low, which takes a bit to adjust to on walking in from a bright day outside! There is a small stage for live acts but thankfully nothing on during my visit! Some cartoonish art of Bavarian characters and a small sandpit (outside) with deckchairs if you fancy kicking off your footwear and feeling the seaside in the centre of a shopping area!!

Quaffs wise, clearly just keg. On tap were Lowenbrau (the most German it gets in here), Tiny Rebel Easy Livin and an assortment of other regular keg beers. From an assortment of bottled beers were precisely zero German offerings!

The place was packed with drinkers at an early stage of a Saturday so they are clearly doing something that attracts the crowds. Saying that this is Cardiff and pretty much like that everywhere that sells alcohol on a Saturday afternoon (rugby or no rugby) in the centre of town. Tolerable at this time but not my cup of Weissbier on a Saturday evening!
