A pleasant and traditional looking pub in this attractive small village, it unusually has a pub sign supported on a wooden frame that extends right across the road on a wooden frame to the beer garden opposite. The garden, or patio more accurately, is also a pleasant spot overlooking the small river that runs alongside.
Internally it is perhaps slightly more contemporary than might be expected and has clearly been renovated at some point, but this has been done quite sympathetically and it does nonetheless manage to retain much of it’s original charm. The main bar at the front of the pub has exposed stone walling on three sides, wooden boards on the floor and a plain whitewashed ceiling interspersed with a few small grey beams. A large fireplace at one end contained a wood burning stove, whilst an archway at the other end led on to a further room. The bar counter took up most of the back wall an was clad with pale blue/grey wood panelling. A number of hops were strung up above, and there were a few odd pictures dotted around the walls, including several of the nearby castle. Seating was a mixture of tables and stools, upholstered in a red tartan fabric. To the right it extends some way further back, eventually leading to a beer garden at the rear. The décor here was broadly similar, although without the exposed stone walling.
Beers on tap were all from Wadworth’s with their Henry’s IPA, 6X and Horizon. The solitary cider meanwhile was Thatcher’s Gold. Overall, a decent enough pub and worth popping in if in the area.

A 17th Century coaching inn which still does B&B. There is no front garden, and it’s set in a terrace of other buildings. The archway into the courtyard is original, although the latter is now a small car park. There is also a pleasant terraced garden at the back, and there is a smaller riverside garden the other side of the road. The front bar is atmospheric and has retained its character and some original architectural features including stone flooring and an inglenook. At the side is a narrow dining room, carpeted, while there is a larger square saloon with comfy chairs behind that, leading to the garden. They have a decent looking food menu but when we visited the kitchen wasn’t open because, despite it being a busy holiday period, “there were no bookings”; several families walked away as there was no food on. That said, the barmaid was really helpful, and a polite enquiry on our part resulted in sausage rolls and scotch eggs which were rather good. There were also dog treats available behind the bar. It’s a Wadworth house, so the two ales on were 6X and Henry’s IPA, both in good condition. I’d be very happy to come back here and probably shall as it’s on one of my regular routes.
