A new build pub on the outskirts of Milton Keynes, it’s a good size development standing in it’s own grounds along with a car park, landscaping and a few tables on the patio at the front. It was pretty much full to capacity on a recent Tuesday evening visit, but that may well of course be due to all the locals checking it out as it has only been open for a couple of weeks.
Inside it’s essentially all one open room, although sub-divided in to different areas with the left hand side more geared up for dining, although many punters in the other half were also eating. Staff all seemed pleasant and friendly, perhaps fresh from their training courses, from the greeter at the door to the landlord who carefully wiped off my glass with a paper serviette as he had spilt a little as he was pouring it. I don’t think I’ve ever had that before! Décor wise it looks as though they’ve tried to go for a farmhouse kitchen look with some chunky wood timberwork, cream painted boards on the ceiling and an old dresser. Flooring was mostly wood strip and parquet, with some grey slate style tiling around the bar and the paintwork looked to be the usual Farrow & Ball options, although there is also some exposed brickwork. A floor to ceiling wine rack acted as a partition wall and there was a large fire-place at one end, although this was not in use.
There is clearly an emphasis on food here and the menu offered an extensive choice and there should be something to suit most palettes. It was divided in to sections such as mains, rotisserie/grill, traditional pies, salads, spuds, etc. The mains were mostly priced in the £8 - £10 range and consisted of the usual pub staples such as Toad in the hole, Ham Egg & Chips, Fish & Chips and even Scampi in a basket. My Hunter’s Chicken was pleasant enough and quite tasty, although clearly not freshly prepared. At £8.75 it was perhaps slightly expensive for something mass produced, but I’ve no real complaints.
Beer wise, the choice was entirely from the McMullen’s stable with their IPA, AK, Country Bitter and Cask Ale (that’s it’s name, not a description!). The solitary cider was Aspall’s Suffolk.
