A 2013 opener, so a mid-market Spoons with little to startle the horses. Split into three sections with fairly neutral light blue, grey and white shades. Three local guest cask and my pints of Purple Moose Whakari and Bendigeidfran Bragdy Lleu were both in good form (NBSS 3.5). The staff were notably friendly and helpful, to the extent of one of the floor walkers giving us tips on some of the better pubs on the section of the Wales Coast Path we were undertaking. Fills a yawning chasm in the locale with no other pub in town going for either the cask or family crowd, meaning the place was packed on both my visits; you’re likely to be queuing for a table during high season at dinnertime. 7.5

A medium sized spoons opposite the railway station and probably the best (only?) bet for decent ale in the town. A long more narrow place, the left hand side is set up more for dining with low tables and chairs, pretty much matching and there’s a bit of banquette seating. This side has panelling and an impressive stone fireplace. The mid section is furnished in similar manner and in case you were worried the right hand end has the tall furniture. That end is almost a separate room as a residual panelled wall divides it off. There are machines but no screens, not even a news channel on mute with amusing subtitles. Beer wise it’s a five plus five set up with all pumps duplicated, Abbot and Doom were backed up with one local, one from Suffolk and a nice beer from Nottingham brewery. Good staffing but let down by an out of date app. Toilets are as usual, Narnia like but in the basement, where there’s a blue leather sofa for some reason, waiting for your wife/significant other to finish in the ladies?

Visit 28th February 2015

My second visit here was on a Saturday February morning when every passenger on the train I was on seemed to pile into here. This is a phenomenon I had only seen before in Aberystwyth. It was much the same as before with mixed groups eating. Despite being a Saturday I could see no obvious signs of a large contingent of the Spoons daytime brigade.
There was a Locale beer on this time and two from South Wales. These were Great Orme Welsh Black, Celt Experience Silures and Evan Evans W H Buckley Grand Cru all at £2.15. The Welsh Black and Silures were superb but the Grand Cru not as good. It was nearly poor enough to send back but I didn't have time as my train was leaving shortly. No change to the score.

Visit 10th October 2014

Apparently this was originally going to be called "Y Gwneuthurwr Hwyliau" which JDW thought translated to The Salt Maker. Local councillors thought otherwise and claimed that the name they had come up with was an odd use of the Welsh language and suggested Pen Cob instead, good news for the English visitors at least.
Whether this story should be taken with a pinch of salt I don't know.
It was originally a Bon Marche shop. Inside it's one long room that is light and airy as there are windows or doors all along the front. The bar area is at the right. It was busy with people of all ages mainly having meals. There was no sign of any Spoons daytime brigade, Wales is much too refined a country for that sort of thing!
There were ten pumps on the bar but with lots of doubling up. The two GK beers, Doom Bore, and Conwy Rampart were all doubled up leaving the American Banks's Young Henry and Wadworth's Mermaid's Red on single pumps. I went for the Mermaid Red (£2.25) which was in good nick.
This is a decent and well run Spoons that was surprisingly busy on an October Friday lunchtime. It goes without saying that it's the Real Ale mecca for the town as most of the alternatives seemed to be just a single real ale or some pubs not even opening at lunchtime.
