A decent pub with friendly locals and staff. The beer choices on our visit were the same as Blue Scrumpy's review below. We went for the Salcombe and found the beer to be served too cold and quite similar to a John Smiths. This pub along with Carlsberg Marston's brewing company are misleading customers on their dispense when serving their beer.
The beer is called 'Fresh Ale' which is in a keg and served through a handpump. This means the beer is ready to serve when it leaves the brewery, whereas a cask beer doesn't leave the brewery as a finished product. Instead the conditioning process is done at the pub and relies on the skills, timing and experience of the staff and licensee. Camra calls this Handpump Hijack.
This pub looks the part from the outside, but is a massive disappointment beerwise.

Thatched pub on the main road through the Heavitree district of Exeter. The entrance corridor is notable for having a prison door from Dartmoor Prison on the right-hand side. Also on the right-hand side is a snug.

The main bar is off to the left of the corridor. It has a raised seating area, which looks like it it an extension to the original pub. The room is fairly cosy and appears to be a favourite for locals who had spilled out onto an outdoor patio to the front of the pub. Inside, the Olympics was being shown on the TV. Dogs are welcome.

At the bar, there were 5 cask ales. Regular beers are Dartmoor Jail Ale, Otter Ale & St Austell Tribute. Guests were Otter Amber & Salcombe Seahorse. The pub is listed in the 2024 Good Beer Guide. John Smith's could be found on keg. There was no real cider, with Thatcher's Gold & Haze being the keg options.
