Recently opened on the site of the former Albert Inn, this is the new tap room for the Fat Head brewery, located directly opposite. The old tap room in the brewery continues to operate, although opening hours have been scaled back and the barman informed us that in the future it may just become a bottle shop and merch store.
Internally the layout remains unchanged, and perhaps much of the décor too, although it’s definitely had a bit of a spruce up and feels a lot tidier and more welcoming than it did previously. Red patterned carpet covers the floor whilst the black suspended ceiling remains. The right hand wall has blue patterned wallpaper with cream wood panelling down below, and opposite this is a fairly long bar counter with green frontage and some glazed green tiles on the wall behind. A few random pictures were scattered around, as well as a quite elaborate wooden clock and a board detailing forthcoming events such as a quiz night, film night and a cheese & vinyl day. The rear wall was unusual, it almost looked like the outside wall of an old cottage with the door to the gents having a brick arched surround and a window up above with a Juliet balcony. Seating was mostly upholstered wooden chairs, along with a padded bench at the front.
Beers on tap were mostly their own as might be expected and on this occasion were Boadicea, Apollo 70, Dolci & Karmana (a collaboration with Quantock Ales), Hopzilla and I’m not your Buddy, Friend!, a tonka and maple milk stout which went down well. Several more were available on keg including their own Sabrotage, Hefeweizen, Thumb War, Okey Dokey, Captain Fathead & The Nectarons, Cherry & Tonka Sour, and Nitro Stout along with PBJ Ice Cream Sandwich (Triple Scoop) from Edinburgh’s Vault City Brewing. Ciders meanwhile were Rich’s Vintage, Just Pressed Astro and one of their own in a collaboration with Rich’s, the amusingly named Fat-chers.

Renamed and refreshed externally since my previous review, not much else seems to have changed with the same landlord still in place, and still swearing like a trooper, not only the F word but the C one too. It’s certainly improved from the outside, and in many ways looks to be quite classy, but this was down to some sort of grant from the local council to improve the street appearance. Other than a coordinating lick of paint at the front of the pub, not much else seems to have changed.
It’s a fairly long and narrow pub with old patterned carpet on the floor with some sort of cream painted brickwork on the walls and a black ceiling. Seating was limited to a handful of tables and chairs down one side, and some high stools at the bar. The rear part of the pub looks quite tatty in contrast to the spruced up front with old tables stacked in one corner, a projector screen and a large shelf which had a TV perched on it. There were some stairs here leading up, but this was all in darkness so presumably not open to the public. The right hand wall was a little more interesting with some deco styling and what looked to be a doorway through to the next door theatre, so perhaps this was at one time all part of the same building. A couple of old photos of the locale, and old drinks adverts were also displayed along here. There were a couple of baseball bats hung up behind the bar, although whether they were decorative or to deal with unruly customers, I’m not sure.
Unfortunately, there were no real ales on tap, with the bar being completely dominated by lagers. The only thing even vaguely resembling a beer was Tetley Smooth on keg. On the plus side they did have Thatcher’s Gold cider, although even that was served to me in a Foster’s glass. I suspect they’re not a pub that worries too much about the provenance of their drinks, and in fact I noticed a bottle of Irish Cream Liqueur behind the bar that had Tesco branding on it.

Easy to miss from the outside as it doesn't look like your traditional pub. The bar sign is very high up and un-illuminated and with the large glass window somehow makes it look more like a bistro or restaurant.
Friendly and chatty landlord, although he was using some very colourful language. To be fair though there was no one else in the pub, no ladies present and we didn't object.
Rather oddly there were several choices of "beer" on tap, but not one of them a real ale - Tetley's, John Smith's & Worthington Best (is that still around? Maybe it was just a tap head). Also Blackthorn cider.
